Many people today have moved to mouse centric movements and operations. The question is what happens when you have no access to your mouse due to a major OS issue (like a crash). I would say it would be terrible if you didn’t know how to recover from your damage due to your lack of command line knowledge (CLI).
So here’s what I suggest… and I’ll even prove it.. Even in Windows (*yes windows).. you can do more from using the comand line than you can using the mouse.. quicker, faster, more efficiently. Here’s the proof.
A simple example…. How do you reconfig the ip quickly? In windows with a mouse, you would have to click on the network icon, click the adapter, and hit repair.
Using the keyboard, you would type “Windows Key” then cmd, then ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew.. All without a mouse. Much quicker than clicking around especially if your mouse doesn’t work.
There are tons of examples via the command line that you can use… (or should I say using the keyboard)…
I highly recommend every windows admin on the planet worth their salt learn how to navigate a window environment mouseless. That is the test.. If you can do it, you’re an ace admin.. It’s not hard, but it makes your life easier.. It also takes you one step closer to the Linux / Unix land.. Where the real money is..
The irony is.. Every linux Admin is a windows admin, but not every windows admin is a linux admin.. That’s the unfortunate truth.. Make yourself better…. If you need help getting your head around working with windows mouseless, hire me.. I’ll give you the basics within 1 hour.. more than you’ll need to survive the issue of a dead computer without mouse capability.. (yes.. it happens alot).
