Many of the commercial products on the market today have their roots in Open Source or GPL software. It’s the dirty little secret of the industry. So why do these products exist if you can get the GPL version for free?
It’s a simple question with a complicated answer.
Corporations and Individuals buy commercial software to fulfill a niche that isn’t so easily filled by GPL software.
Commercial software is a blessing for many people. It provides the ability for easier configuration and installation of products / software. Additionally, it also allows for easier management in many cases. One other thing to consider about commercial software is simply, “It’s supported.”
You have technical support as well as additional features that may not have been implemented or are very hard to implement in the GPL / Unsupported version.
So, before we all start bashing commercial software, let’s consider that these people have further developed a product to bring it to the masses. They’ve improved the product and they deserve to reap the rewards from their efforts.
