The Term Webtop has been a long time, but has been a fledgeling technology that has failed to take off. The reality is the technology wasn’t ready. In my honest opinion, the original creators had the right idea, but they got the whole concept wrong.
So here’s where I’ve come to think about it on both a corporate level and as well as a personal level. There used to be a product called Citrix Winframe / Metaframe an early predecessor to the managed desktop. The only problem? Citrix priced themselves out of the market (which they continue to do for some odd reason).
It comes from the fact that the majority of their business came from Healthcare and Healthcare CIOs will pay anything. Why? They have the money. Unfortunately, there’s been no innovation in the company.
They just bought a few companies and are still pricing themselves out of the market.
The solution? Something I’ve been playing with quite successfully, I might add. It has many implications on both a corporate and personal level.
The Virtual Desktop Machine. So what am I talking about? Simply, a Centos or Ubuntu instance I can access remotely. This works with Windows as well. RDP in using your tablet or phone or computer. All of my data is in the cloud, I always have an insane amount of bandwidth, it’s fully-redundant… Do I need to say more?
From my home, I’m not a gamer so I just RDP in. From my ipad, I do the same. From my phone, same thing..
It’s fast and very convenient.
As for corporate users, consider this.. having real power and complete lockdown control without the information NEVER leaving your control. That’s power..
Also makes lost laptops a problem of the past.
